The sculptures and drawings I create attempt to transport the viewer to magical and thought-provoking places. My art reveals the complex intersections between place, mark-making, object, and action. My two-dimensional drawing reflects my three-dimensional visions, and my sculptures suggest the language of a flattened form. I’m compelled by the architectural restlessness when two- and three- dimensional works collide.
Working outside on a large-scale sculpture connects me with the environment. The physical rigor of creating large interactive sculptures connects my body and mind to the physical world. It is important that I create this work myself. Because all parts are handmade, I take pleasure seeing the joy my work gives those who experience it, play on it, interact with it in their own creative way. I feel connected to their experience because I built a platform for it to happen.
My sculptures fall in the tradition of David Smith, Gonzales, and Picasso. However, I am creating sculptures and environments at the same time. My drawings are explorations of sculptural/ architectural space and also explore the community’s role as participant and my role as artist. My work is not just for those who regularly visit art galleries or those that can purchase art. I champion the value art plays in daily life.
